"This girl shivers and crawls under the covers with all her clothes on and falls into an overdue library book, a faerie story with rats and marrow and burning curses. The sentances build a fence around her, a Times Roman 10-point baracade, to keep the thorny voices in her head from getting too close."

0h! hobbit.

once upon a time there was a girl called jade.
one day jade became really infatuated with the lord of the rings trilogy.
she did silly things such as:

  • scrap booking anything to do with the lord of the rings.
  • she bought magazines that cost up to R90 if they had anything to do with the lord of the rings.
  • she spent what should have been her lunch money on printing colour pictures of the lord of the rings.
  • she washed dishes for money in order to buy a vhs on the making of the movie.
  • she bought two out of the three soundtracks (and then knew every song, including pippins)
  • she fantasized about having an elvish tattoo.
  • she got an elvish name generated on a website and actually thought that was her new name.
  • she could quote almost everything from the first movie (and annoyingly so)
  • she had a vision of herself running off to new zealand to, uhm, find the shire?
  • her brother and her once went on a little car trip up the road to where they used to stay and there was a bus stop. and on the bus stop was a HUGE poster of frodo baggins enclosed in a thick wall of plastic. that didn't stop them however as they used the kitchen knife to unscrew the poster and then drove home with the car doors open as the poster was too big to actually fit. however we moved and had to dump it. i wonder if anybody else noticed that the one side of the bus stop was missing?
  • she cries in the movie whenever: gandalf dies, when frodo tells sam to leave, when merry and pippin get split up, when everybody bows down to the hobbits, when frodo and bilbo leave, when the credits roll down...and so on.
  • my best friend in high school and i went on holiday once to a place called villiersdop. we had a plan to tie pots and whatnot onto the back of our backpacks...and then proceed to climb up the mountain (i want to see mountains again gandalf, mountains!). however when that didn't work we ended up sword fighting with some branches in a nearby little forest. oh dear.
  • i'm short. so i thought that was awesome...maybe even, hobbit related.
  • i spent countless hours on fan sites and forums with fellow...friends.
  • my family got so annoyed by my love for the movie that they actually wouldn't let me rent it out anymore (yeah i don't know why back then i didn't just buy the movies...haha)
  • and then proceeded to rename it, "Bored Of The Rings"
i could go on.
and scare you a bit more.
but i was 14.
in lust.
and living in a dream world back then wasn't so bad...it actually got me through a rough patch that was happening in reality.
and it gave me an ever lasting love for the fantasy genre.
i will forever be thankful towards J.R Tolkien.
he was a true literary genius.
(sorry twilight fans, but back then that was how real fantasy was written)

  3. And when I said DECENT, I meant it in a ruling-out-Twilight-kinda-way :)
